Law clerk's account book, 1772-1780.

Probably compiled by a law clerk in Essex County, Massachusetts with the initials J.L., this account book records work transacted for several prominent 18th century Essex county attorneys, including Daniel Farnham, William Pynchon, Nathaniel Peaselee Sargent and John Lowell. The entries include fees for various bills, petitions and continuances. The first page is a memorandum listing items to acquire, such as forms; fees to collect or pay, and a list of fees collected for building jails in Ipswitch (in 1771) and Newburyport (in 1769-1770). The final entries, which are dated 1778-1780, are more general and deal with purchases of groceries and dry goods for Joseph Bowditch and Elizabeth Jeffry, digging a garden and pulling a tooth. Undated 8" x 8" manuscript deed of sale between John Williams, Jr. and Thomas Davis laid in. This deed mentions a Capt. Saltonstall and is signed by John Carleton. Notes on the verso of this document mention a Benj. Daland. He could have been Benjamin Daland, Jr., a soldier who was killed during the British retreat from Concord on the first day of the Revolutionary War. Captain Saltonstall may have been Dudley Saltonstall, the important American naval commander and associate of John Paul Jones.

1 v. (14 leaves, 1 folded leaf laid in) ; 17 cm.
